State Board of Canvassers Certify Kansas Primary Election Results

Thursday, August 29, 2024

TOPEKA – Yesterday, the State Board of Canvassers certified the results of the Kansas primary election held on August 6. The official results are now posted on VoteKansas.gov.

The board, comprised of the Secretary of State, Governor, and Attorney General, reviewed the results as submitted and certified by each of the 105 Kansas counties.

Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab said voter turnout was approximately 17%, or 336,139 voters. Factors contributing to the low turnout include the lack of a U.S. Senate race and no statewide elected officials on the ballot this election cycle, a combination that occurs once every 20 years, as well as few contested legislative primaries.

“This was the second of three elections to be conducted in 2024, the first being the Presidential Preference Primary in March,” Schwab said. “Our trained county election professionals continue to demonstrate their proficiency and knowledge in conducting elections in a safe and secure manner.”

Other facts about the election include:

  • 40,025 mail-in ballots returned out of the 58,348 ballots that were sent to Kansas voters.
  • 62,918 ballots were cast advance-in person.
  • There were 16 contested Kansas Senate primaries out of 40 districts.
  • There were 25 contested Kansas House of Representative primaries out of 125 districts.
  • A close-race audit was conducted in Kansas House District 51, Republican primary. The outcome of the race was unchanged by the results of the close-race audit.
  • A recount was conducted for the District Magistrate Judge, District 17, Position 1. The outcome was unchanged by the results of the recount.

Schwab said county election professionals are already working on preparations for the November 5 general election, when the presidential race and significantly more legislative and local races will be decided. Voter registration is underway and continues through October 15.
