Schwab Satisfied with One-on-One Call with United States Postal Service's (USPS) Postmaster General

Thursday, October 10, 2024

TOPEKA – Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab said today that he has spoken with USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy regarding concerns over the USPS operational failures in handling of an estimated 1,000 Kansas primary election ballots.

Schwab has made several efforts to address this issue with the USPS to ensure a resolution before the November General Election.

Schwab said the USPS investigated the concerns raised regarding the delay in ballot delivery and DeJoy acknowledged that errors were made in the processing of Kansas’ primary election ballots.

"I had a productive conversation with Postmaster General DeJoy today,” Schwab said.

“He reassured me that the USPS will implement new measures to prevent similar issues in the upcoming General Election and acknowledged past errors in processing primary ballots,” Schwab said.

Schwab noted that while he is empathetic to the challenges that USPS faces, there are still inherent risks to returning a ballot through the USPS.

“That is why we are encouraging voters who vote by mail to use a more secure way of returning your ballot to the county election office, if possible,” Schwab said.

Voters can return their ballot through the county election office, to any advance voting location in their county, to any polling location on election day in their county, or via a county owned drop box. Voters who must mail their ballots should make a plan to do so at least seven days in advance of the deadline for counties to receive ballots, as advised by the USPS.

The Secretary appreciates today’s conversation and believes voters will have more confidence in the USPS following these developments.
