Kansas Secretary of State's Office Initiates Post-Election Audit

Tuesday, November 5, 2024

TOPEKA – In accordance with K.S.A. <25-3009/a> and K.A.R. 7-47-1, the Kansas Secretary of State’s office will initiate the 2024 general election post-election audit at 9 a.m. on November 6.

As part of this process, the Secretary of State’s office will randomly select one federal, one legislative, and one county race for auditing in each county.

Once selections are made, each county election office will be notified of the races to be audited. Each county election office will then randomly select 1% of the precincts within each selected race to be audited.

Ballots from these selected precincts will be hand counted to verify that the hand count aligns with the tabulated vote count. Audits will be conducted by a sworn bipartisan election board, consisting of trained members.

Post-election audits were first conducted in 2019 under Secretary Schwab’s administration.

“Post-election audits promote election transparency and verify election results,” said Schwab.

Audits must be completed before the county canvass, which must take place by November 18. For more information on post-election audits in your county, please contact your county election office HERE.
