Secretary Schwab Initiates Close-Race Audits

Wednesday, November 6, 2024

TOPEKA – Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab today initiated two close-race audits based on unofficial results from the November 5 general election. Election day results indicated the race for Kansas Senate District 5 and Kansas House District 49 are within the legal parameters for executing a close-race audit.

A close-race audit is initiated under K.S.A. 25-3009 if the election is within 1% of the total votes cast and reported on election night. The close-race audit is in addition to a post-election audit, which is conducted in each county in 10% of all county precincts in the specified race, with a minimum of one precinct in the county.

Races that are subject to a close-race audit include those for federal, statewide, and state legislative offices.

“These audits are just another step in showing how fair, free, and secure Kansas’s elections are,” Schwab said.

The close-race audit is performed by the county(ies) and shall review all ballots selected to ensure the hand vote count is identical to the vote count from the tabulators.
